HALF CENTS

LOT 105 1794 C-1a R3 AG3 . Variety with Large Edge Letters. Slightly sharper but recolored glossy olive and steel brown with lighter reddish tan in protected areas on the reverse. Smooth but there is a scratch or struck-through line in the field over the bust and a dull scratch at IT in UNITED. The date is no longer readable. LDS with the reverse rotated 30 degrees CCW from the normal head-to-foot die orientation.

LOT 102 1793 C-2 R3 Liberty Cap NGC VF Details Environmental Damage . Slightly glossy olive brown and chocolate with slightly lighter brown on the highpoints. Looks smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals very fine granularity in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris or contact marks. The best identifying defects are a small planchet void on the rim right of the date and a thin one over the R in AMERICA (both as struck). MDS with the reverse rotated 50 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Our grade is VF20 sharpness net F15 . Certificate #4328890 004

RARE 1794 C-2B LARGE EDGE LETTERS

From the Travis Height Collection

LOT 103 1794 C-1a R3 F15 . Variety with Large Edge Letters. Five points sharper but there are some small contact marks on otherwise smooth, attractive surfaces. A collection of tiny ticks in the field over the date and another on the second S in STATES are the notable defects. The 179 in the date is relatively weakly struck but the date is easily readable. Everything else is strong. M-LDS, Manley state 3.0, Fuhrman state 3, with strong die clashmarks on both sides. Struck with the reverse rotated 30 degrees CCW. Weight 102.5 grains.

LOT 106 1794 C-2b R5+ AG3 . Variety with Large Edge Letters. Sharpness VG10 but dark and covered with moderate corrosion that weakens some of the devices and portions of the legends. No verdigris. The only marks are some old, dull vertical scratches in the field before the neck and a small planchet chip or dull nick in the center of the obverse. Dark steel and olive brown, nearly black. The date is weakened by the roughness but it is complete and easily readable as are most of the legends. The edge letters are complete. EDS, Manley state 1.0. Weight 97.2 grains.

LOT 104 1794 C-1a R3 AG3 . Variety with Large Edge Letters. A couple points sharper but covered with fine porosity on all but the highpoints which are smooth. LOT 108 1794 C-3a R5 G6 . Variety with Small Edge Letters. Slightly sharper but covered with microscopic granularity and there is a very old scratch between the date and truncation. No verdigris or additional marks. Reddish chocolate brown with lighter brown on the devices. The date is weak but easily readable and the legends are complete. The edge letters are strong. E-MDS, Manley state 1.0. Struck with the reverse rotated about 65 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation.

LOT 107 1794 C-3a R5 VG10+ . Variety with Small Edge Letters. Slightly sharper with extremely faint granularity well hidden under glossy olive brown and steel toning. No marks or verdigris. The date and legends are strong and this piece has excellent eye appeal for the grade. LDS, Manley state 2.0, Fuhrman state 2, with a small bulge right of the date. Removed from a PCGS slab graded F12 (PCGS label #1003.12/3479134 included). Weight 94.5 grains.

CONDITION CENSUS 1794 C-6A RARITY

LOT 109 1794 C-6a R5+ VF20 . Variety with Small Edge Letters. Sharpness VF30 or slightly better but there are several light scratches in the fields on the obverse and some faint vertical ones on the neck. All the scratches are blended into the very attractive glossy light olive brown and chocolate toning. Frosty light brown and tan toning shows in protected areas. The reverse is choice; a dull nick over the F in OF is the only mark on that side. Sharply struck LDS, Manley state 2.0, with a small area of swelling right of the date. Not perfect but still clearly in the condition census for this tough variety. Sharper than the Manley and Fuhrman plate coins. Removed from an ANACS holder graded EF40 Details, Graffiti (ANACS label #5299659 included, and it shows the attribution). Weight 110.0 grains.

Ex Jim McGuigan-Ray Rouse

LOT 110 1794 C-8 R5 VG8 . Sharpness VF20 but there is obvious planchet erosion on both sides. No marks or verdigris, and the devices are strong except for weakness at the bottom of the reverse due to having been struck off center in that direction. Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel. LDS, Manley state 2.0, with a strong radial die crack through the second T in STATES into the leaves below. Struck with the reverse rotated 25 degrees CCW.

CLIPPED PLANCHET

LOT 111 1795 C-5a R3 No Pole VF25 . Five points sharper but there is a fine, old scratch from the O in OF to the leaf left of the C in CENT. The surfaces are smooth and the toning is a very attractive glossy light chocolate brown. The date is sharp and the legends are strong. MDS with a die crack bisecting the reverse, and the field under the crack has started to rise. A slightly curved planchet clip is located left of the cap (as struck). Weight 77.1 grains.

Lot 113

LOT 112 1795 C-5a R3 No Pole F12 . A few points sharper but there are minor contact marks including tiny ticks at the lower left part of the obverse and a few faint hairline scratches on the upper part of the reverse, strongest at OF. Otherwise smooth and quite nice for the grade. Later die state. The die crack across the upper part of the reverse is strong and the reverse is rotated 25 degrees CCW. The date and legends are clear except for the parts of HALF CENT that were affected by the crack and resulting die failure inside the wreath. Ex Jerry Weinzierl-Roxanne Himmelstein Collection LOT 113 1795 C-5a R3 No Pole VG8 . Sharpness VF30 but covered with moderate to strong granularity. There are traces of shallow greenish patina around UNITED and dull rim nicks right of the bust. The date is complete and easily readable and the legends are clear. EDS. The die crack slanting through the wreath is light and the reverse is rotated 10-15 degrees CCW.

1795 C-6A WITH INDENT ERROR AND TAL EDGE LETTERING

LOT 114 1795 C-6a R2 No Pole G5 . Struck on a 1794 Talbot Allum & Lee Cent with a Single Indent. A couple points sharper but covered with uniform very fine granularity. No verdigris or marks. Dark steel brown and chocolate. The date and legends are complete and readable but not strong. Struck on an out-of-round planchet cut from a 1794 TAL Cent that left “PAYA” on the edge off the bust tip (from PAYABLE AT THE STORE OF). In addition, there is a clear, strong indent at the top of the cap, and obvious but unidentified design details are visible in the indented area. Most likely a result of being struck against an overlapping planchet. A neat multiple-error. Weight 73.8 grains.

1795 C-6B THICK PLANCHET

LOT 115 1795 C-6b R5 Thick Planchet, Plain Edge VG8 . A couple points sharper with minor roughness in the fields on the lower half of the obverse, strongest under the cap. The remainder of the planchet is smooth. No verdigris and the only notable sign of contact is a tiny rim nick right of the denominator. Glossy steel brown and chocolate. The obverse was lightly cleaned and retoned but the toning on the reverse appears original. EDS, Manley state 1.0, without any hint of a bulge right of the Y in LIBERTY. The date is relatively weak, as usual on the thick planchet version, but it is complete and easily readable while the reverse legend is strong. Struck on a thick planchet most likely cut down from a spoiled large cent. The weight is 100.3 grains versus the 84 grain standard for normal half cent planchets in 1795. Comes with a nice provenance. Ex Bill Luckett-Bill Weber 4/1989-Ken Seachman, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/22/2005:1096-Mike Spurlock, McCawley & Grellman 2007 FPL-Ray Rouse, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/14/2008:30-the Arlington Collection (includes the Goldberg lot ticket)

1796 NO POLE COPY

LOT 116 1796 C-1 R6 No Pole Electrotype Copy VG8 . Glossy light chocolate brown. Mostly smooth and void of verdigris. The only notable marks are a scratch left of the bottom of the cap and a shallow flake on the jaw. The date is clear and the legends are readable. A very nice electrotype copy that could pass as original if not for a small, intentionally made chip on the edge that exposed some of the underlying base metal. Most likely a copy of the famous Brobston example sold by Stack’s in January 1963. Several copies were made and one of those copies was sold as genuine in the 1992 auction of the Roger S. Cohen, Jr. Collection (Superior 2/2/1992:66). It’s that deceptive! A great hole-filler.

BADLY MISALIGNED OBVERSE ON 1797 C-2

LOT 117 1797 C-2 R3 AG3 . Slightly sharper but there is a dull contact mark in the center on both sides. Otherwise smooth and choice, void of defects. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. The date is bold. The obverse is badly misaligned, perhaps 5% off center to K-8, but the reverse is reasonably well centered on the planchet. Later die state with swelling on the lower right part of the reverse.

Ex Roxanne Himmelstein Collection

LOT 119 1797 C-3b R4 Low Head with Lettered Edge G5 . A couple points sharper but there are fine scratches on the lower half of the obverse. Otherwise smooth and void of marks or other defects. Glossy light chocolate brown with lighter brown toning on the devices. The date is bold and the legends are all readable. MDS, Manley state 2.0, Fuhrman state 2, with a subtle wave in the field off the chin but no crack. The lettering on the edge is complete and clear (although the letters are too tall for the thin planchets used on this variety). A decent example of this popular “Redbook” variety. Weight 78.3 grains.

LOT 118 1797 C-3a R3 Low Head with Plain Edge VG10+ . Very attractive glossy medium brown. Looks perfectly smooth but a glass reveals extremely fine granularity in the fields and protected areas while the highpoints are smooth. The best identifying mark is a small planchet chip on the edge before the forehead. The date is strong and the legends are complete. MDS, Manley state 2.0, Fuhrman state 2, with a short crack from the chin. Struck slightly off center to K-3.5 affecting only the dentils. Removed from a PCGS holder graded F12 (PCGS label #35107.12/11340231 included). .

RARE 1802/0 REVERSE OF 1800

LOT 120 1802/0 C-1 R5+ Overdate 2 over 0, Reverse of 1800 AG3 . The obverse is sharper than the reverse, as usual for this very rare variety, with a split of 4/2+. Smooth surfaces with glossy steel brown and chocolate toning and no defects. A very tiny rim nick left of the upper end of the hair ribbon can help identify this piece. The 2/0 feature is not strong but it is visible, the date and LIBERTY are easily readable, and about two-thirds of the legends on the reverse are readable. The radial die crack through the E in UNITED is strong. A decent lower grade example of this very rare “Redbook” variety. Removed from an ANACS holder graded AG3 (ANACS label #892314 included, and it shows the attribution). Weight 72.4 grains.

RARE LATE STATE 1803 C-2

LOT 122 1803 C-2 R4 G5 . Slightly sharper but there is a rim bruise left of the date, a dull nick under the B in LIBERTY, and a diagonal scratch from the F in OF to the A in HALF. Otherwise smooth and very nice with just a few trivial marks. Glossy dark steel and olive brown. Extremely rare LDS, Fuhrman die state 9, with a cud break at STATE, and the section over the left top of the first T is slightly depressed as a retained cud. The date and legends are all strong. Nice for the grade in spite of the marks. A die state called Unique in the recently published Fuhrman reference.

IMPORTANT 1804 C-1

LOT 124 1804 C-1 R3 PCGS graded AU55 . Frosty steel brown with tan in protected areas, particularly on the obverse. Peeps of mint luster show in protected areas, especially on the reverse. The only marks are a couple thin nicks in the field above the hair ribbon and a small puff of darker olive brown toning on the bust. Just a light touch of friction on the highpoints of the devices and the eye appeal of this half cent is excellent. Scarce EDS, Manley state 1.0, Fuhrman state 1, with a light die crack arcing from the second T in STATES to the right side of the M in AMERICA (this crack occurred during the die’s earlier use during the 1803 C-3 die pairing). Our grade is AU50. A high condition census example of a variety that is seldom found in grades above VF. Only a single mint state example is known, and it has an ugly stain on the obverse (Missouri Cabinet Collection, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/26/2014:59 which brought $21,850). The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. (The slab is scuffed on the reverse.) Certificate #35140.55/27959265

RARE 1804 C-2

LOT 125 1804 C-2 R6- G4+ . Slightly sharper but there is a light diagonal scratch on the portrait from the hair right of the ribbon to the bust. Otherwise smooth with only trivial contact marks. Glossy light olive and steel brown. MDS, Manley state 2.0, Fuhrman state 2, with a strong die crack at the top of EA neat die state. Unevenly struck as always, especially in this die state, with weakness on the left side and strong details on the right side (due to the dies being out of proper axial alignment). As a result the 180 is relatively weak (but still easily readable), and the same for ITED ST. Less than 30 examples are known and the majority of those grade Good or below with the finest grading F15. This is the Manley plate coin for his state 2.0.
