EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 THE NEWCOMB-STARR 1817 N-5

LOT 392 1817 N-5 R3 PCGS graded MS64 Brown . Choice lustrous medium brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and golden tan in protected areas on the reverse. A beautiful cent with solid mint state eye appeal (hence the high grade assigned by PCGS), but there is a hint of friction on the very highest points of the portrait. The best identifying marks are a tiny streak of darker toning down from the lower right point of star 8 and a small spot of similar toning over star 11. Nicely struck E-MDS, Grellman state a, showing radial lines in all the stars and very fine radial die flowlines in the fields. The repunching on the left base of the N in ONE is strong and most of the dentils on the reverse are visible. Our grade is AU58. A beautiful cent that comes with an important provenance. The attribution and Widok-Wachtel provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Certification Number 36562.64/38269468 Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & Co. 5/16/1945:499-Floyd T. Starr, Stack’s 6/13/1984:84 (as MS60)-Wesley A. LOT 393 1817 N-6 R1 PCGS graded MS62 Brown . Frosty steel brown and chocolate with subtle light bluish steel overtones. Satiny luster covers the fields and protected areas and this cent has excellent eye appeal. A small puff of slightly darker toning near the dentils just right of the date, a few tiny ticks on the rim at star 4, and a tick on the diagonal of the N in ONE can help identify this piece. Sharply struck EDS, Grellman die state a, with clearly defined dentils around both sides. Called MS60 and tied for CC#10 in the Noyes census, his photo #32739. Our grade is AU58 Choice. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Certification Number 36565.62/25649710

LOT 394 1817 N-7 R3 VF25 . Frosty olive brown and steel with reddish brown toning in protected areas, mostly on the reverse. The only notable marks are some small specks of very shallow verdigris inside the wreath. The fields are satiny and this cent has very nice eye appeal. The obverse is not as sharply detailed as the reverse, as always, since the obverse die was well worn before this die pairing began. M-LDS, Grellman state c, with a strong “Mouse” break resting on top of the head and die cracks from the portrait, the strongest one from the outer part of the hair bun to the dentils over star 10.
