FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION 1793-1814 CENTS

1794 S-52 R6- Head of 1794 VG8+ . Mostly glossy medium steel brown and light chocolate. No corrosion or verdigris, but this cent is nearly covered with small nicks and planchet chips, only the highpoints and some of the protected areas are void of marks. Otherwise the details of this cent are consistent with a higher grade. A collection of faint, nearly horizontal hairline scratches at the 17 can help identify this cent. LDS, Breen state II, Heck state 3 late, with a strong radial die crack to the top of the cap. Graded VG8 and tied for CC#11 in the Noyes census, his photo #25992. 1794 S-53 R6 Head of 1794 VG8+ . Significantly sharper than the assigned grade, but there is corrosion on the neck and lower right quarter of the obverse. The rest of the planchet is reasonably smooth with only microscopic roughness in the fields and protected areas on both sides. The highpoints are smooth but the corrosion on the neck is significant, and there are traces of microscopic greenish verdigris in that area. The only notable contact mark is a rim bruise just left of the date. Mostly glossy medium brown with darker olive brown in some of the protected areas. EDS, the only die state for this variety due to its short production run. Graded VF20 net VG10 and tied for CC#10 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF20 net VG7 and CC#9, his photo #22578.
