EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

1794 S-46 R3 Head of 1794 VF20 . Glossy steel brown and olive with slightly darker steel brown on the highpoints and traces of lighter brown in protected areas. Smooth and attractive with the details of a slightly higher grade, but there is a planchet lamination at RICA (as struck but still a distraction). The only other notable mark is a dull rim nick left of the bottom of the cap. LDS, Breen state V, Heck state 4, with strong die cracks on the obverse and a small internal cud break at the top of the 4. A neat die state. Graded VF25 net VF20 and tied for CC#20 in the Noyes census, his photo #39291. A relatively modest cent but it comes with a nice provenance.  Ex Henry O. Grandberg-Henry C. Hines-Dr. William H. LOT 52 1794 S-47 R4 Head of 1794 VF25 . Attractive glossy medium steel brown with frosty lighter brown in protected areas. Smooth with minor marks and light, even wear. Just a few small marks including a dull rim nick at the I in LIBERTY, a small pinprick left of the 7, and a small dent at the left foot of the first T in STATES. MDS, Breen state II, Heck state 3, with a clear radial die crack along the left edge of the first A in AMERICA. Graded VF30 net VF20 and tied for CC#5 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #38653. A variety that is quite difficult to find in higher grades; only the ANS example grades better than VF by EAC grading standards.
