EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 328 1803 S-263 R3 Small Date and Fraction, PCGS AU Detail, Altered Surface . Glossy chocolate brown and steel. The obverse is especially glossy due to a thin coating of lacquer or some similar protectant; the reverse is slightly dull from extremely faint granularity. Sharply detailed with just a light touch of wear on the devices. No verdigris but there are some marks. There is a scuff on the rim at LIB, dull, light vertical scratch through the eye, and a few tiny spots of roughness on the neck. M-LDS, Breen state VI, with a strong cud break under the date and a crack from the 3 through the bust to the dentils opposite the chin. Struck with the obverse die slightly misaligned to K-9. Graded EF40 and tied for CC#8 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF45 net VF35 and tied for CC#6, his photo #26124. Our grade is net VF30. An attractive but imperfect cent that comes with a nice provenance. 36389.94/56556703 Ex C. Douglas Smith-Robert J. Kissner, Stack’s 6/1975:383-Jeffery M. Peck 5/26/1976-Dr. Robert J. Shalowitz-C. POPULAR S-264 “REDBOOK” VARIETY
LOT 329 1803 S-264 R4+ Large Date, Small Fraction, PCGS Fine Detail, Altered Surface . A few points sharper with extremely faint roughness hidden under glossy olive brown and chocolate toning. No verdigris, just a few small marks including three tiny chips or small digs in the field behind the portrait and another at the edge over ER in LIBERTY. E-MDS, Breen state II, with swelling at STA but before the triangular breaks at the top leaves. The date and legends are complete and clear and the eye appeal of this cent is nice in spite of the imperfect surfaces. Graded F12 net G6 and tied for CC#27 in the Noyes census, his photo #32563. Our grade is F12 net VG8+. A decent example of this popular “Redbook” variety. 36410.94.52084642
