FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION 1793-1814 CENTS
CONDITION CENSUS S-233
LOT 295 1802 S-233 R2 AU50 . Glossy chocolate brown and steel with mint frost in protected areas, particularly on the reverse. The toning is a slightly darker share of olive brown at the bust tip and left of the O in OF. A very sharp cent with the barest hint of rub on the highpoints, but there are some small marks. The notable marks are a dull rim nick right of the Y, a few fine hairline scratches at the right side of the Y, some tiny ticks hidden in the hair at the ear, and a barely visible rim bruise right of the date. The surfaces are smooth but there are traces of crud in protected areas on the reverse. Sharply struck E-MDS, Breen state II early. There are die clashmarks on both sides but the bulge at the bust tip has not formed. Graded MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU55 net EF45 and tied for CC#2 honors with the ANS example.
