EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 270 1800 S-212 R3 PCGS graded AU Detail, Cleaned . Glossy olive brown and lighter chocolate with some frosty lighter brown in protected areas on the reverse. Sharply struck with just a bit of friction on the highpoints and smooth surfaces except for some granularity at STAT. No verdigris, and the only contact marks are a nick on the chin, another in the field to the right, and a smaller one high on the cheekbone. The color is attractive and looks original, but the cent may have lightly cleaned long ago and beautifully retoned naturally over the decades. MDS, Breen state II, with some small lumps from die rust on both sides and a light die clashmark right of the E in ONE. Graded AU50 net EF40 and tied for CC#4 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF45 net VF35 and tied for CC#8, his photo #39048. Our grade is EF45 net EF40. Comes with an interesting provenance. 36224.92/61468282 Ex Dr. William H. Sheldon-ANS 2001 (in exchange for the improperly obtained original ANS coin)-R. E. “Ted” Naftzger, Jr. (via William C. Noyes)-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection
THE CENT THAT ENCOURAGED FRED TO COLLECT DIE VARIETIES
LOT 271 1800 NC-3 R5+ G4 . Glossy chocolate brown with smooth surfaces except for an obvious planchet void or rough dent in the hair right of the hair ribbon. Otherwise just minor contact marks, mostly light rim bruises. MDS with the usual swelling at the lower curls. The date and legends are clear except for weakness at STA thanks to the swelling; the diagnostic spike up from the top of the I in AMERICA is obvious. Graded G5 net G4 by Noyes, his photo #26207. Not the most valuable cent in this collection, but one of the most meaningful.
Identified as a rare die variety in April 1976 after residing for four years in Fred’s date set. Coveted by Jules Reiver but never surrendered.
