Fred Borcherdts ANA Sale

EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 251 1800 S-197 R1 AU50 . Sharply struck with just a hint of friction on the highest points of the devices, but there are microscopic hairlines on both sides. Has the look of a mint state cent that was improperly brushed. Frosty light chocolate and steel brown with faded red in some of the protected areas. The best identifying mark is a vertical planchet flake in the field before the chin. M-LDS, Breen state III, with small lumps (from die rust) scattered over both sides. The cud break at IB is strong. Graded AU55 and tied for CC#6 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 net EF40 and tied for CC#16, his photo #26101.

TERMINAL STATE S-198

LOT 252 1800 S-198 R5+ VG7 . Several points sharper with fine roughness on both sides, mostly on the reverse. No verdigris or contact marks, just a few pits including a couple on the N in ONE and another on the numerator of the fraction. Rather glossy medium brown and chocolate, the obverse darker in the center and lighter near the rim. The obverse is mostly glossy, the reverse less so due to the microscopic roughness. Probably recolored long ago. Extremely rare terminal die state, Breen state VI, with a strong cud break at MER. Called VG7 and tied for CC#6 in the Bland census. Noyes says F12 net VG7 and tied for CC#3 overall but tied for finest known of the terminal die state. Another great die state in the Borcherdt Collection.
