EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 249 1800/79 S-196 R1 Style II Hair, Overdate 80 over 79 EF40+ . Choice glossy chocolate brown and steel. Smooth with light wear on the devices and superb eye appeal. Just a few trivial marks from flawless including a tiny diagonal hairline in the field behind the head and a tick or small planchet chip under the left edge of the E in STATES. M-LDS, Breen state III early, with a very light die crack through the E into the hair below. The vertical die lines in the fields on the upper part of the obverse are still clear. Graded EF40 and tied for CC#9 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40 Choice and tied for CC#8. A beautiful cent that comes with a nice provenance.

UNREPORTED RIM CUD ON S-196

LOT 250 1800/79 S-196 R1 Style II Hair, Overdate 80 over 79 EF45 . Glossy light olive and steel brown with peeps of frosty faded red in protected areas thanks to a light cleaning long ago. Sharp with just a light touch of friction on the highpoints. The only marks are some very faint hairlines on the obverse and a few microscopic planchet flakes above and below the N in ONE (as struck). TDS, later than anything mentioned in the Breen reference. The die crack through the E into the hair is strong and there are additional fine die cracks up from the hair ribbon and from the Y arcing to the rim off the end of the nose. In addition there is a clearly defined rim cud at RI in AMERICA, a unique die state to the best of our knowledge. Graded EF45 and tied for CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF45 net EF40 and tied for CC#8. Another special die state in this remarkable collection.
