EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 225 1798 S-176 R4 Style II Hair, Small 8 VF20 . Sharpness EF40 but there are some rim bruises on both sides, and they have been lightly smoothed to minimize their impact. The rim bruises are left of the lower curls and at both the first and second S in STATES. In addition the field near the rim bruises on the obverse has been smoothed as well. The only other mark is a dull nick in the field before the neck. Sharply struck with very little actual wear. Rare EDS, Breen state II. The vertical crack up from the bust is faint and the reverse is still uncracked. Struck slightly off center to K-7. Graded VF35 net VF20 and tied for CC#9 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40 net VF30 and tied for CC#2, his photo #25904.

POSSIBLE FINEST S-177

LOT 226 1798 S-177 R4+ Style II Hair, Small 8, PCGS graded XF45 . Choice glossy medium chocolate and olive brown with frosty lighter brown in protected areas on the obverse. The surfaces are perfectly smooth except for fine die rust off the end of the bust (as struck). Just trivial marks, mostly tiny ticks on the cheek, neck, and inside the wreath. A tiny rim nick over the F in OF is the best identifying mark. MDS, Breen state III, with die cracks and clashmarks. Graded VF25 and tied for CC#2 in the Bland census behind a marginally finer example. Noyes says VF35 net VF30 and tied for CC#1, his photo #25848. Our grade is VF25+ , very close to VF30. A very significant cent, and the eye appeal is superb for the grade. Comes with a provenance that is nearly a century old. 36101.45/61275945 Ex James G.
