FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION 1793-1814 CENTS

SECOND FINEST S-170

LOT 216 1798 S-170 R3 Style II Hair, Small 8 EF40 . Very attractive glossy chocolate brown and olive with lighter brown in protected areas. There is just a light touch of friction on the highpoints and mint frost covers the protected areas. Would rate a higher grade but there are two mint-made planchet flakes on the obverse, an obvious one at the top of the B and another small one hidden in the hair left of the shoulder. Otherwise just a few tiny ticks on both sides and a very shallow low spot at the C in CENT. E-MDS, Breen state II early, with hard, slightly reflective fields and fine die clashmarks on both sides, but no die cracks. Graded EF45 and CC#2 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF45 net EF40 and tied for CC#2, his photo #26295. Comes with a nice provenance.
