EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

THE HINES-DOWNING S-161

LOT 205 1798 S-161 R2 Style I Hair, Small 8 EF45 . Very attractive glossy medium olive brown and steel with mint frost in the protected areas. Would rate a slightly higher grade but there is a short scratch in the field right of the Y in LIBERTY. Otherwise this cent is choice. E-MDS, Breen state IV, with die cracks on both sides. Graded EF45 and tied for CC#8 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40, his photo #26593. Comes with the famous Hines-Downing provenance.

Ex Henry C. Hines-Homer K. Downing, 1952 ANA Sale (New Netherlands Coin Co.), lot 1808-K. P. Austin-George Ramont-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Ramont collection envelope)
