EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 186 1798 S-148 R2 Style I Hair, Large 8 VF30+ . Sharpness EF40 but there are extremely faint hairlines visible on both sides if you get the light at just the right angle. In addition there are blunted areas on the neck and around the wreath, all caused by debris (lubricant) on the dies. The best identifying mark is a very small tick in the field left of the base of the L in LIBERTY. Glossy steel brown and chocolate with lighter brown and tan in protected areas on both sides. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks. Graded EF40 and tied for CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF35 net VF30 and tied for CC#6. Comes with an important provenance. Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & Co. 2/7/1945:187-David Henderson (the Benson Collection), Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles 2/16/2001:305-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Newcomb auction envelope)
FINEST S-148 WITH CUD
LOT 187 1798 S-148 R2 Style I Hair, Large 8, PCGS graded AU58+ . Frosty tan with steel brown toning on the highpoints. A sharp, very attractive cent with just a light touch of friction on the highpoints. The sharpness is closer to mint state than the grade we assigned, but there is a very light, barely visible scratch from the neck to the bust. Otherwise just a few small nicks in the field under the hair ribbon and a small low spot in the field against the neck. M-LDS, Breen state VI, with a bold cud break connecting ERTY to the rim and fine die cracks on both sides. Our grade is net EF45+ . A relatively new discovery that came from England; not seen by Noyes or Bland. This is the finest known example with the cud break at ERTY. A prize for the collector of significant die states. 36023.58+/61275938
