LOT 177 1797 NC-3 R5+ AG3 . Several points sharper, particularly on the obverse, but the planchet is covered with fine to moderate roughness. No verdigris and the only contact marks are a scratch at the top of the hair ribbon and a lighter one in the field below the ribbon. Partly glossy steel brown and light olive mixed with hints of reddish chocolate. EDS, Breen state I, with an uncracked reverse. Not perfect but the date is bold and the attribution points are clear. One of about 4 dozen known of this die combination, and nearly all are in low grades. The finest outside the ANS grades F15.

FINEST SEMI-UNIQUE TERMINAL 1797 NC-3

LOT 178 1797 NC-3 R5+ Fair-2+ . Slightly sharper but covered with fine to moderate roughness. No verdigris, just a few shallow pits or planchet flakes on the upper part of the obverse. Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter brown highlights on the highpoints. The date is complete and clear as is the upper half of the reverse, but the upper obverse and lower part of the reverse are softly struck. Semi-unique terminal die state with a clearly defined cud break at TES. Only two examples of this die state are known; the other is a scudzy G5 net Fair-2 that was lot 176 in the Goldberg sale of the famous R. S. Brown, Jr. collection sold by the Goldbergs on 1/27/1996, and the rim cud is weak on that example. Graded G4 net Fair-2 and tied for finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #62604. This piece is clearly the superior example of the die state.
