EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 147 1797 S-121b R3- Reverse of 1796, Gripped Edge VF20 . At least 5 points sharper but there are a couple small rim bruises on otherwise smooth surfaces. The rim bruises are left of the L in LIBERTY and over the F in OF. Glossy olive brown and dark steel mixed with some lighter brown tones. LDS, Breen state V. with die cracks on the obverse, die clashmarks on the reverse, and swelling at NITE that weakens those letters. The Grip Marks on the edge are clear.

FINEST TERMINAL STATE S-122

LOT 148 1797 S-122 R5+ AG3 . Slightly sharper but dark and covered with fine roughness, strongest on the reverse. There is a bit of hard verdigris on the reverse and a couple notable marks including a small rim bruise at the B in LIBERTY, another at the O in OF, and a horizontal nick in the leaves under the M in AMERICA. Terminal die state, Breen state VI, with a very bold cud connecting MERIC to the rim. Only three are known in this die state, and (surprisingly) this is the finest of that small group. One of the rarest and most impressive cuds in the entire Sheldon series.
