FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION 1793-1814 CENTS

LOT 128 1796 S-112 R4+ Draped Bust VF30 . Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate with slightly darker steel brown on the highpoints. Lightly worn with smooth surfaces, and the best identifying marks are two microscopic ticks under the front edge of the eye. Traces of mint frost show in protected areas and this cent has superior eye appeal. M-LDS, Breen state III early, with a die crack through the right base of the second T in STATES to the wreath and minor swelling inside the wreath. Graded VF30 and tied for CC#7 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF30 Choice and tied for CC#6, his photo #25997.

Ex Robert E. Matthews (acquired unattributed at the 1987 ANA Convention), Superior 5/28/1989:257-J. R. Frankenfield-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection

LOT 129 1796 S-113 R5 Draped Bust VG10 . Glossy chocolate brown and steel. Mostly smooth but there are areas of microscopic roughness in the obverse fields plus a significant planchet void at the top of the wreath. No verdigris or notable contact marks. LDS, Breen state V, with a strong die crack through 17 and the lowest curl, and the area under the 7 is starting to rise. Not perfect but still superior to the Breen plate coin that illustrates this final die state. Graded VF20 net F12 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #26132.
