LOT 118 1796 S-104 R3 LIHERTY Obverse VF25 . Very attractive glossy medium olive and light chocolate. Sharply struck with smooth surfaces and minor contact marks including a couple light scratches let of the L in LIBERTY and a couple lighter ones in the field left of the lower curls. None of the marks catches your eye. M-LDS, Breen state III, with fine die rust evident in some of the protected areas and a fine die crack connecting the tops of the T & Y in LIBERTY. Graded VF25 and tied for CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF30 net VF20 and tied for CC#6, his photo #22089. The LIHERTY error is quite bold. A nice example of this popular “Redbook” variety.

LOT 119 1796 S-104 R3 LIHERTY Obverse VG7 . Mostly glossy medium brown with chocolate brown in protected areas. The highpoints are smooth but a glass reveals very light roughness in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris; the only notable mark is a shallow planchet lamination in the field off the chin. The date is strong and the legends are clear. LDS but not the latest, Breen state IV early, with a raised retained cud break at TY. This is the discovery coin for the die state, one that was unknown to Breen. It is the only example of this intermediate die state known to us.
