LOT 103 1796 S-90 R5+ Liberty Cap NGC graded VF30 . Glossy dark olive brown and steel on the devices with frosty lighter brown in the fields and protected areas. Mostly smooth but there is a collection of tiny planchet chips at the left wreath ribbon (as struck) and two small pits at the rim over AM. A minor beveled planchet clip over the second T in STATES is a good identifying feature of this cent. Nicely struck EDS with a nearly inverted reverse (struck head-to-head rather than head-to-foot) as often seen on this rare variety. The date is bold and the legends are strong except for some weakness at OF due to planchet chipping. Called CC#8 in the Bland and Noyes census lists, Noyes photo #31853. A nice mid-grade example of a rare variety than usually comes in very low grade. 2038608-001

LOT 104 1796 S-91 R3 Liberty Cap PCGS graded XF45 . Glossy olive brown and steel with frosty tan and lighter brown in protected areas and some reddish light brown at the neck, pole, and bust. The only marks are a faint scratch on the cap and the usual complement of small planchet chips on both sides, especially on the reverse opposite the head. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a barely visible raised horizontal line in the field left of the second-lowest curl. Otherwise the obverse fields are smooth, void of the similar die defects that are usually present on this variety. Graded VF25 net VF20 and tied for CC#14 in the Noyes census, his photo #25731.
