EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 101 1796 S-88 R4 Liberty Cap PCGS graded VF30 . Attractive glossy chocolate brown and steel. Sharply struck with the details and eye appeal of a higher grade, but there are a couple faint vertical hairline scratches on the portrait and a half dozen more in the field left of the cap. The surfaces are smooth except for a small patch of fine roughness left of the numerator. MDS, Breen state II early, with a faint die crack through the right side of the 7 into the truncation above. Graded VF20 and tied for CC#7 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF30 net VF20 and tied for CC#6, his photo #26016. Our grade is VF25 sharpness net VF20. 35771.30/52084638

LOT 102 1796 S-89 R3 Liberty Cap PCGS graded VF35 . Glossy chocolate with lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. Smooth with very nice eye appeal and trivial marks. A tiny chip at the right top of the I in LIBERTY and a barely visible rim bruise right of the Y are the best identifying marks, but neither is significant. E-MDS, Breen state I, before any die clashmarks or crumbling. Graded VF20 net F15 and tied for CC#10 in the Noyes census, his photo #33127. Our grade is F15+ . A decent example of a variety that is surprisingly difficult to find in higher grades; the finest grades only VF30 by EAC grading standards. 35774.35/57516982
