EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
1796 S-81 R3 Liberty Cap PCGS graded AU53 . Glossy chocolate and lighter brown with frost in protected areas, particularly on the reverse. Smooth and choice except for a very thin planchet fissure in the hair from below the right edge of the B to just left of the earlobe (as struck). Otherwise just a couple trivial contact marks including a light nick mid-jawline and a small nick at the bottom of the O in ONE. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks. The repunching on the first 0 in the denominator is clear. ONE CENT is relatively strong which is a big plus for this variety. Graded EF40 net VF35 and tied for CC#13 in the Noyes census, his photo #27073. Our grade is VF35. 35750.53/57516977

THE MORGAN-NEWCOMB S-82
1796 S-82 R5 Liberty Cap PCGS AU Detail, Scratch . Sharpness EF45 but there are numerous fine scratches on the top of the head, and a few of them extend into the field at LIBERTY and the rim above. Fortunately all the scratches are old and blended into the toning. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and show just a few trivial marks. Glossy uneven mix of dark steel brown and frosty tan with some small areas of darker reddish chocolate on both sides. LDS, Breen state II, with fine die clashmarks on both sides. Graded VF30 and tied for CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40 net VF20 and tied for CC#7, his photo #22046. Our grade is EF45 sharpness net VF25. A sharp but imperfect cent that comes with a very impressive provenance that is a century old. 35753.95/57516978 Ex Dr. G. F. E. Wilharm, B. Max Mehl 2/15/1921:1347-William Festus Morgan, J. C.
