FRED BORCHERDT’S HALL OF FAME COLLECTION 1793-1814 CENTS
S-77 EX NEWCOMB-SHELDON-NAFTZGER
LOT 91 1795 S-77 R3 Plain Edge, Thin Planchet, PCGS graded AU55+ . Glossy dark steel brown with generous amounts of frosty golden tan faded down from mint color in the fields and protected areas. Lightly worn and choice except for a few small planchet chips including a rather obvious one on the end of the chin. Nicely struck except for the usual weakness at the N in UNITED and O in OF. E-MDS, Breen state II, with faint die clashmarks on the obverse and no die cracks. Graded AU50 by Del Bland and tied for CC#4 in his census. Noyes says AU50 net EF45 and tied for CC#5, his photo #34059. Our grade is EF45+ , close to AU50. Two of the finer examples are in the ANS Collection. A very nice cent that comes with a great provenance. 35726.55+/57538504 Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & Co. 2/7/1945:80 (as UNC)-T. James Clarke-Dr. William H. Sheldon 4/19/1972-R.
