Fred 2 Book

LOT 741 1856 N-16/15 R2+ Italic 5 PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Light olive and steel brown with 5% of the obverse and 20% of the reverse showing mint red. Sharply struck with trivial marks and nice eye appeal, but the luster is subdued by a thin layer of natural oxidation. A small spot of greenish verdigris on the lower half of the first S in STATES is the only notable mark. EDS, die state a, with smooth fields and sharp die lines at the dentils under 185 and star 1. (This is Newcomb’s #16.) Our grade is MS60+. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 406213.64/20482949

LOT 740 1856 N-14 R1 Italic 5 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC approved. Frosty light bluish steel brown with nearly 20% of the mint red remaining, mostly on the obverse. There is a spot of darker toning hidden in the hair above the inner curl and a nick-like planchet chip on the coronet above the B in LIBERTY (as struck). MDS, die state b, with the usual strike weakness at the top of the obverse that left tiny planchet chips around stars 6-7. Our grade is MS62. The attribution and Goodridge Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 406211.64/27391408
