EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
LOT 648 1853 N-24 R2 AU50+. Glossy light to medium brown with slightly darker brown toning on the highpoints. Close to mint state but there is a small planchet flake on the cheek near the earlobe (as struck), a light scuff at the top of star 3, and a dull nick on the nose before the eye. E-MDS, die state a. The fields are starting to show microscopic die flowlines in the fields but the vertical lines near the main curl are sharp.
LOT 651 1853 N-26 R2 MS60. Lustrous light olive and steel. Sharp and satiny. Would rate a higher grade but there are small splashes of reddish toning on both sides. Traces of microscopic carbon can be found in a couple of the spots on the reverse, particularly the one at the berry right of the E in ONE. MDS, die state b. The fine lines at ERI are gone but the two points from the main curl over the inner curl are clear.

LOT 649 1853 N-25 R1 Repunched 1 & 3 EF40+. Five points sharper but there are some light contact marks on the obverse including a tiny scratch left of star 1, a vertical one right of the eye, and a diagonal one under star 12. None of these marks catch your eye and the eye appeal of this cent is quite nice. Glossy light olive and brown with specks of reddish brown toning at stars 11-12. Scarce EDS, die state a. The repunching under the 1 & 3 is clear and a fine die line passes through TE in UNITED into the wreath below that I. The line connecting the feet of the N & E in ONE is clear.
LOT 652 1853 N-27 R2 AU50. Glossy light to medium brown. Mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and there is just a touch of light friction on the highest points of the devices. The notable marks are a nick right of star 4 and a spot of darker olive brown toning over star 1. LDS, die state d. The earlier die lines are gone and the narrow rim cud at stars 10-11 is visible only at star 10. The earlier rim cud at star 3 is not visible at all due to centering.

LOT 653 1853 N-28 R3+ AU50. Frosty light brown and olive. Smooth and very attractive with light friction on the highpoints and no significant marks. Two small, dull ticks on the end of the chin are the best identifying marks. E-MDS, die state a late. The die lines from the dentils at stars 2-4 are dull but visible.
LOT 650 1853 N-25 R1 Repunched 1 & 3 MS63. Lustrous light steel brown and light olive with faded mint red in the fields and protected areas on both sides. Satiny mint frost covers the planchet and the only notable defects are several shallow planchet chips and depressions on the rims, the largest one under the 3 (as struck). A speck of fine carbon at the tip of a dentil above star 10 can help identify this cent. MDS, die state b. The early die lines are gone but the repunching at the bottoms of the 1 & 3 is still visible.
