EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 CHOICE RED & BROWN N-29

LOT 570 1851 N-29 R2 MS63+. Lustrous mint red fading to steel brown with more than a third of the planchet showing bright mint color. Satiny with great eye appeal. The only defect is a tiny scratch right of star 11; otherwise this cent is virtually flawless. MDS, die state b. The line under the base of the first 1 is gone; the line at the throat is dull but visible. Graded MS65 by Del Bland. An impressive example of the variety, CC#2 in the Grellman census, and this piece has more mint red than the marginally finer coin.

LOT 571 1851 N-30 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous light to medium brown and light chocolate with traces of mint red visible on both sides. A very attractive cent with just a few trivial marks including a small spot of very fine carbon on the jawline, a tick on the jaw, and a dull nick over the left side of star 11. M-LDS, die state b late. The fields are flowlined and the point from the jaw is gone, but the points from the tops of ENT are still visible. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#9 in the Grellman census. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 406743.64/41000375 Ex Joseph V. Dooley, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 1/11/1997:632-R.
