SCARCE EARLY STATE N-23
LOT 564 1851 N-23 R3 NGC graded MS64 Brown. Frosty chocolate and olive brown with overtones of bluish steel and 10% of the mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. Sharply struck with excellent eye appeal. The notable marks are a thin nick on the jaw over the throat and a hairline scratch between stars 6 & 7, and neither mark is significant. Scarce EDS, die state a, with a fine die line from the dentils to the top of the A in STATES. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#8 overall for the variety but second finest of the early die state in the Grellman census. (The reverse of the holder is scuffed.) 630528-003

LOT 565 1851 N-23 R3 VF35. Glossy tan and light olive with darker steel brown on the highpoints. Smooth with nice eye appeal. The only notable marks are some barely visible nicks on the rim at star 5, a few more at stars 12 & 13, and a small rim nick over the second S in STATES.
LOT 567 1851 N-25 R3- AU55. Glossy light to medium brown with mint luster in the fields and protected areas on both sides. Essentially void of marks, just a few microscopic ticks from perfection. Looks mint state but there is a hint of friction on the highest points. M-LDS, die state b. The fields are flowlined and the earlier points from the throat are gone.

LOT 566 1851 N-24/27/32 R3 EF45+. Glossy light to medium brown. Smooth and very attractive with light wear on the highpoints. A couple small nicks under star 2 and a rim nick at the F in OF are the notable marks. MDS, die state b. The die lines from the dentils at star 1 are gone and the die lines from the inner curl are short and dull. A faint die crack passes through star 8. This is Newcomb’s old #27.
