F.R. ALVORD DISCOVERY COIN

LOT 163 1794 C-4a R-3 F12 . Choice glossy light olive and chocolate brown. There is a tiny pinprick-like planchet chip in the field before the eye visible with a glass, trivial but the best identifying mark. Smooth and virtually flawless with excellent eye appeal. Rare EDS, Manley state 1.0. The reverse is rotated 15 degrees CCW. A premium example in every respect. 105.4 grains. Removed from a PCGS F15 holder (1003.15/26779361).

LOT 161 1794 C-2b R-5+ Large Edge Letters AG3 . VG sharpness but corroded with porous, rough surfaces. Attractive light brown and steel, the surface issues make identifying the die state difficult. This is the discovery coin from the F.R. Alvord Collection that Samuel Chapman sold in June 1924. Broken out of an NGC VG Details holder (5747071-011) with the Alvord Discovery Partrick provenance noted.

LOT 164 1794 C-5a R-4+ F15 . 10 points sharper but cleaned and retoned long ago and now toned bluish steel brown with lighter brown underneath. There are trivial marks and abrasions on either side, the only worth noting is a rim nick below the 9. The reverse is rotated 70 degrees CW. EDS, Manley State 1.0.

LOT 162 1794 C-3a R-5 F12 . VF sharpness but there are scattered spots of microporosity around the obverse peripheries and a couple notable scratches under NIT in UNITED. The only other notable marks are fine, vertical hairlines on Liberty’s hair and shoulder. Glossy chocolate and steel brown surfaces. Manley Die state 1.0. 106.0 grains.
