 FINEST OF DIE STATE N-14

LOT 121 1838 N-14 R4 PCGS graded AU50 . Frosty dark olive and steel with lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. There is a collection of microscopic contact marks in the field before the nose, a tiny splash of silvery toning on the left side of star 11, and a nick in the dentils off the end of the wreath stem. Very rare M-LDS, die state b late, with a rim cud break from over star 7 nearly to star 8, a precursor to the famous full cud break that follows soon after. Called EF45 and CC#8 overall in the Noyes census but finest known of the die state by 30 points, his photo #36921. Our grade is EF45 . 37216.50/13093945 Ex Douglas F. Bird 5/1996-R. LOT 122 1838 N-14 R7 (as a die state) F12 . Glossy light chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are smooth and this cent has nice eye appeal for the grade. The notable marks are some light nicks scattered about both sides including three sharp ones on the rim at the E in UNITED. Extremely rare terminal die state, die state c, with a large cud break at star 6 reaching star 5 and the dentils above star 7. The earlier dentil fusing between stars 7 & 8 is visible. Second finest of this very popular die state. Called F12 and CC#2 behind a slightly finer example of those few known with the large cud break in the Noyes census, his photo #39377.  Ex Denis W.
