NEAR GEM N-8 EARLY STATE

LOT 91 1837 N-8/7 R1 Plain Hair Cord, Medium Letters, PCGS graded MS66 Brown, CAC Approved . Very lustrous light olive and bluish steel with generous traces of mellowed mint red on both sides, particularly on the reverse. The planchet is covered with satiny mint frost, even on the highest points of the devices. Sharply struck and nearly flawless. A carbon spot on a leaf under the A in STATES is the only defect, and its location minimizes its impact on the eye appeal. EDS+, die state b. The die lines over ERICA are clear and there is a tiny lump over the right top of the N in CENT. This is Newcomb’s #8. A beautiful cent; not seen by Noyes. Our grade is MS64, CC#4 for the variety in our census. (The holder is scuffed.). 1735.66/25008176

LOT 92 1837 N-9 R1 Beaded Hair Cord, PCGS graded MS65 Brown . Lustrous light olive and steel brown with subtle hints of sea green overtone. Faded mint color shows in the protected areas on the reverse where at least 10% of that side shows very faded mint red. LDS, die state j, with many fine die cracks on the obverse, clearly defined rim cuds at stars 11-13, and die scratches near the dentils at stars 2-4. The added die lines at the dentils are strong. Called MS60 and tied for CC#13 in the Noyes census, his photo #36912. Our grade is MS63. (The holder is scratched.). 37132.65/13072494
