 CONDITION CENSUS RED & BROWN N-5

LOT 89 1837 N-5 R2 Plain Hair Cord, Small Letters, PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown . Mellowed red fading to steel brown, nearly half the planchet showing some faded mint red color. Lustrous and very attractive with trivial marks. There are a few small spots of darker steel brown toning including one at the dentils under the 3 in the date and another under the first S in STATES. Just a few trivial contact marks including a thin vertical nick on the jawline and a horizontal one over the 83. MDS, die state c, with fine die flowlines covering the fields on both sides. The fine die line connecting the feet of the I & T in UNITED is gone. Called MS63 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #21743. Bland says MS70- and CC#1. Our grade is MS63 . Regardless of the census list used, this piece is one of the very finest known of the PHC/SL “Redbook” type, which is only available with this N-5 die variety. LOT 90 1837 N-6 R2 Plain Hair Cord, Medium Letters, PCGS graded MS66 Brown . Beautiful lustrous bluish steel and light olive with at least 20% of the planchet showing faded mint red, mostly on the reverse. Must have been close to getting an “RB” designation from PCGS. Unbroken satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. Just a few trivial marks from flawless. A light nick or planchet flake on the rim at star 6, a tiny speck of carbon at the dentils right of star 13, and a barely visible scratch between the I & T in UNITED are good identifying marks. Sharply struck MDS, die state b. Die lapping has removed the tiny lumps around the outside berry under TE in UNITED, but a few remain tucked tightly around the berry left of the bottom of the C in CENT. A wonderful cent that comes with an excellent provenance. Our grade is MS63+, close to MS64. Noyes says MS63 and tied for CC#1, his photo #36383.
