 FINEST 1835 N-9 RARITY

LOT 60 1835 N-9 R4 Head of 1834, Large 8 & Stars, PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved . Lustrous light olive and steel brown with faded red in protected areas on both sides, especially on the reverse where at least 15% of that side shows some faded red color. A sharp, very attractive cent, but it was chemically cleaned a very long time ago. The toning today looks natural (hence the MS63 assessment by PCGS and the CAC approval). Smooth with just a few trivial marks including two shallow nicks on the jaw and a smaller nick on the front edge of the neck close above the bust. The marks are insignificant and this cent has solid mint state eye appeal, but there is a hint of rub on the very highest points of the devices. EDS, die state a, with an uncracked reverse. Struck with the reverse rotated 45 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Graded MS60 net AU50 and finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #34119. Our grade is AU58. Over the decades this cent has been graded from MS60 to MS70. People can disagree about grades and standards change, but what hasn’t changed is the fact that this is clearly the finest known example of a tough die variety.
