EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 CONDITION CENSUS 1831 N-12

LOT 29 1831 N-12 R1 Large Letters, PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved . Highly lustrous light bluish steel brown. The surfaces are satiny and this cent has great eye appeal. Just a few minor marks including a dull nick on the chin, another on the brow lock, and a couple faint spots of darker toning on the lower edge of the bust. EDS+, die state c, with a fine radial die crack to the dentils from the outer point of star 4 and another from the end of the crack right of the date down to the dentils. The obverse fields are hard and very slightly reflective while fine die rust is evident on the reverse (even though this is supposed to be the first marriage for the reverse die, it never looks new with perfectly smooth fields). This was the earliest die state Ted Naftzger was able to find in nice condition. Called MS63 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and tied for CC#6, his photo #21790. LOT 30 1831 N-12/4 R4 (as a die state) F12 . Sharpness VF20 with some sharp scratches along the top and bottom edges of CENT. Otherwise smooth and attractive with glossy medium brown and light chocolate toning. Rare terminal die state, state j, with the “Harpooned Whale” cud covering the lower left point of star 12 in addition to the other two points of that star and the 5 points of star 13. An attractive example of this rare die state, in the lower part of the condition census for the terminal state. (The earlier version of the “Harpooned Whale” that has the lower left point of star 12 uncovered is the more common of the two versions.).
