RARE RETAINED CUD

LOT 403 1803 S-260 R-1 Small Date, Lg Fraction EF45 . AU50 sharpness but there is a scratch or struck through line from the B in LIBERTY through the hair towards Liberty’s mouth, as well as a faint scratch before the forehead. Reflective golden tan and light steel brown. Lustrous surfaces with nice eye appeal. EDS.

LOT 406 1803 S-262 R-3 VG7 . Has some details of a slightly higher grade but this cent was cleaned and is now retoned olive and steel brown with areas of tan in protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are smooth and free of any significant marks. Extremely rare TDS, Breen state III late, with a bold crack through STAT that outlines a slightly sunken retained cud break. Seven examples of this die state are known to us, and this one is the second finest of that small group.

LOT 404 1803 S-260 R-1 Large Fraction VF25 . XF40 sharpness but cleaned and now toned medium to dark olive and steel tones. There are a few wispy pin scratches that blend in well on the portrait, otherwise free of notable marks and verdigris.

LOT 405 1803 S-261 R-2 Large Fraction EF40 . Five points sharper with smooth surfaces and very little wear on the devices, but there is a fine diagonal scratch in the field from just before the eye to the dentils right of the Y and a nick-like planchet chip left of the mouth. Otherwise this cent is essentially flawless with very little wear on the highpoints. Glossy tan and light brown with steel brown and chocolate on the devices. M-LDS, Breen state V, with clashmarks on both sides plus die cracks and significant swelling at the lower curls. A nice cent that comes with the famous Garrett Collection provenance.

LOT 407 1803 S-264 R-4+ Large Date Small Fraction PCGS VG10 . Dark steel brown in the fields, lighter brown on the devices with microporosity on the surfaces. There are a few trivial pin pricks on the obverse in the upper hair, behind the lowest hair curls, and before the lower neck. LDS with the advanced crack over Liberty’s chest, and the heavy crack on the reverse. Our grade is VG8. 1497.10/36340191
