EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 FINEST TERMINAL STATE S-253

LOT 396 1803 S-253 R-2 VF25 . Sharpness EF40 or slightly better but covered with microscopic roughness under rather glossy brown and chocolate toning. There are a few tiny specks of verdigris in protected areas and some light scratches on the obverse, mostly on the neck. The eye appeal of this cent is better than the technical description. TDS, Breen state VI, with a rim cud that connects 180 to the rim, and this cud extends to beyond the lowest curl. Graded EF40 net VF30 and finest of the terminal die state by 10 points in the Noyes census, his photo #26223.

LOT 397 1803 S-254 R-1 VF35 . Glossy light olive and chocolate with light brown and tan in protected areas on the obverse. The only notable mark is a very light scratch under UNIT. E-MDS, Breen state II early, with clashmarks and very light die cracks on both sides.  Ex George Ramont-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection (includes the Ramont collection envelope)  UNIQUE PARTIAL CUD

LOT 398 1803 S-255 R-1 VG7 . Slightly sharper with smooth, attractive surfaces for the grade, but there are some contact marks including a significant nick under the first A in AMERICA. Glossy uniform light olive. LDS, Breen state IV early, with an incomplete cud break over STA. This is the only example seen with an incomplete cud. It may be partial due to an incomplete planchet, or it may be an intermediate die state. Regardless this is the only example known to us. Graded VG8 net VG7 by Noyes, his photo #34201.
