FINEST LATE STATE S-229

LOT 375 1802 S-227 R-2 VF25 . Sharpness EF40 but recolored glossy steel brown with tan in protected areas, especially on the obverse. Very fine hairline scratches cover much of the obverse, mostly in the fields. Otherwise there are no notable signs of contact. MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on both sides. Graded EF40 net VF30 and tied for CC#16 in the Noyes census, his photo #25946.

LOT 376 1802 S-228 R-2 Error Fraction 1/000 VF30+ . Sharpness EF40 with sharp details and very little wear, but there is a bit of dark verdigris tucked into protected areas around the wreath. Otherwise just a few contact marks including a very light rim bruise left of the middle curls and a scrape on the edge at the right top of the F in OF. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with die spalling (scaling) in the obverse fields and die cracks on the reverse. Graded AU50 net EF40 and tied for CC#13 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40 net VF20 and tied for CC#27, his photo #25976.

LOT 378 1802 S-229 R-2 G6 . A few points sharper but covered with light roughness, mostly in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris and the notable marks are a rim bruise left of the lower curls and a shallow pit between the upper leaves of the wreath. Partly glossy medium to dark steel. The date and legends are clear. M-LDS, Breen state VI, with a cud break connecting TE in STATES to the rim. Graded VG10 net G6 and finest of the die state in the Noyes census, his photo #38283.

LOT 379 1802 S-231 R-1 Stemless Wreath EF45 . Glossy steel brown and chocolate with frosty lighter brown and tan in protected areas. Smooth surfaces with trivial marks including a few ticks left of the lower curls. Nicely struck except for the lowest curl and STATES, which are weak. LDS, Breen state VIII, with die cracks and clashmarks on both sides. Graded EF45 net VF35 and tied for CC#19 in the Noyes census, his photo #39045.

LOT 377 1802 S-229 R-2 F15+ . Slightly sharper with too many small contact marks for the higher grade, mostly high on the shoulder and in the field behind the portrait. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and the toning is an attractive glossy brown and light olive with some darker olive brown in protected areas. MDS, Breen state III, with fine die cracks on both sides.
