EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 371 1802 S-225 R-3 VF30 . Choice glossy light to medium chocolate brown with mint frost in some of the protected areas. Smooth with trivial marks and great eye appeal. M-LDS, Breen state V, with a small but clear cud break over the F in OF. Graded VF30 net VF25 and tied for CC#16 overall but finest of those known with the cud break at F in the Noyes census, his photo #26028.

LOT 370 1802 S-225 R-3 EF45 . Slightly sharper but the toning is uneven, and that affects the eye appeal of an otherwise very impressive cent. Glossy dark olive brown mixed with light to medium brown on both sides. The strike is very sharp and there is just a hint of friction on the highest points of the devices. A tiny nick in the field below the lower end of the hair ribbon, another on the throat, and a faint hairline under AME to the dentils at the adjacent F are the only notable marks, and they are trivial. MDS, Breen state V, with a cud break below 802 and the dentils before the throat are crumbled. The fields are hard and slightly reflective. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#13 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF45 net VF30 and tied for CC#15, his photo #26195.

 FINEST SEMI-UNIQUE S-225 RETAINED CUD

LOT 372 1802 S-225 R-3 VF25 . At least 5 points sharper with smooth surfaces that have a few contact marks. The notable marks are small digs over the E and Y in LIBERTY, a couple vertical hairline scratches in the field behind the portrait, a rough line of ticks at the leaf tips over the O in ONE, and a small dig at the top of the numerator. Mostly glossy medium olive brown and steel. Extremely rare LDS, Breen state VI, with a raised retained cud break at ES-O. Graded VF25 net F12 and finest of only two known in this die state in the Noyes census, his photo #23124. The other piece is a scudzy Basal State-1. An important cent for the collector of significant die states, and it comes with a great provenance.
