EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 327 1798 S-161 R2 Small 8, Style I Hair VF20 . Attractive glossy light olive brown and chocolate. Smooth with light to moderate wear and only trivial contact marks. A small rim nick right of the Y may help identify this cent. E-MDS, Breen state IV, with minor swelling and die cracks on the reverse. A nice cent for the grade, nearly choice.

LOT 329 1798 S-165 R4 Large 8, Style II Hair F15 . At least 10 points sharper but there are some marks including a stain of darker olive brown toning near the rim behind the head and a few scratches in the field near the dentils before the face. A thin planchet fissure in the dentils below the fraction can easily identify this cent. Otherwise this cent is smooth with light wear. Glossy light olive with a few puffs of darker reddish olive on both sides. MDS, Breen state II, with light die clashmarks on both sides. The repunching at the second T in STATES (normal T over inverted T) is clear. Graded VF20 and tied for CC#6 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF30 net F15 and tied for CC#6, his photo #26389. A nice example of this tough die variety, and it comes with a nice provenance.

LOT 328 1798 S-162 R4 Small 8, Style I Hair F15 . Five points sharper with smooth surfaces and nice eye appeal, but there are a few contact marks. There is a thin diagonal nick on the cheek, a pair of fine diagonal hairline scratches in the field before the shin, and a minor rim nick at the M in AMERICA. Glossy medium olive brown and steel with some lighter brown in protected areas. M-LDS, Breen state II late, with swelling on the obverse and die cracks on the reverse. Graded VF20 net F15 and tied for CC#12 in the Noyes census, his photo #36718.

LOT 330 1798 S-166 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair VF25 . Glossy steel brown and chocolate with microscopic specks of slightly darker olive brown covering the obverse. These specks are only visible under magnification. The only marks are extremely tiny ticks and planchet chips scattered over the obverse. Lightly worn with the hair details of a higher grade, but a bit unevenly struck, as nearly always for this variety. A light diagonal nick tucked under the lowest curl is the best identifying mark. M-LDS, Breen state VI early, with cracks, clashmarks, and small rim cuds.
