CONDITION CENSUS S-133

LOT 309 1797 S-131 R-2 Stemless Wreath VF35 . Sharpness EF45 or slightly better but there are some contact marks on otherwise smooth, very attractive surfaces. The notable marks are a fine scratch from the earlobe to the bottom of the neck, a diagonal nick through the R in LIBERTY, a nick right of the Y, and a pair of light scratches through the berry below C in CENT. Glossy medium steel brown and tan with frosty reddish tan faded down from mint color in the protected areas, especially on the obverse. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a fine vertical crack in the field before the portrait and a small lump hanging down from the end of the nose. There is a fine double profile from the forelock to the end of the nose. Graded VF30 and tied for CC#10 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF45 net VF35 and tied for CC#4, his photo #32244. A sharp, attractive example of the popular Stemless Wreath variety.

LOT 311 1797 S-133 R5 Stemless Wreath VF20 . Sharpness EF45 with areas of fine corrosion on both sides, strongest on the right side of the obverse and at NITE on the reverse. There are traces of verdigris in the roughened areas and just trivial contact marks that are lost in the roughness. Partly glossy mix of olive brown, steel, and reddish brown. LDS, Breen state V, with a radial die crack to the bottom of the neck and strong die clashmarks. Graded AU50 net VF20 and tied for CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU50 net VF20 and tied for CC#4, his photo #26329.

LOT 310 1797 S-132 R5+ Stemless Wreath VG8+ . Sharpness F12, slightly better in some of the well-struck areas, but there are dull nicks on the obverse and fine roughness in the fields and protected areas. Rather glossy reddish steel brown and light chocolate with dark scale in some of the protected areas, mostly on the left side of the reverse. MDS. The date is weakly struck, as usual for this die pairing, but it is easily readable and the legends are clear. Graded F12 net VG7 and tied for CC#21 in the Noyes census, his photo #26974.
