 UNIQUE TERMINAL S-123

LOT 307 1797 S-123 R-4 G5 . Sharpness F12, slightly better on the obverse than on the reverse, but there are several vertical scratches down from the bust just right of the date and several more through the center of the reverse. None of the scratches is deep or obvious, but they are visible to the unaided eye. The most obvious defect is a dull dent in the center of the reverse. The only other marks are some relatively minor rim nicks on the reverse. What makes this cent so special is the die state. This is the latest state known with a relatively strong cud break under the left end of the wreath ribbon. This die state was unknown to Breen and is the only example known to us. Noyes graded F12 net G5 and the finest of this unique die state in the Noyes census, his photo #60278. Another prize for the serious student of significant die states.

 CONDITION CENSUS S-125

LOT 308 1797 S-125 R-5 VF20 . Sharpness VF35 but covered with fine porosity, strongest in a small patch close below the hair ribbon. There are microscopic specks of verdigris left of the date, and the only notable contact mark is a line of dull but relatively strong nicks under IT in UNITED. Partly glossy medium steel brown blending to chocolate in protected areas. Possibly retoned long ago. MDS, Breen state II, with obvious bulges at the date, bust, and into the field above. Struck with the reverse rotated 20 degrees CCW. Graded VF35 net VF25 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF35 net VF20 and tied for CC#2, his photo #26388. Not perfect but clearly one of the finest of this tough variety, and most of the top pieces have similar surfaces defects.
