EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

LOT 278 1794 S-53 R-6 G5 . Several points sharper but covered with fine to moderate roughness on all but the highest points of the devices. No verdigris or marks other than a small mint-made planchet clip affecting the dentils left of the date and over the opposing second T in STATES. Partly glossy olive brown with lighter steel brown on the devices. The date is complete and clear, and the legends are easily readable. Graded G5 by Del Bland. Noyes says VG10 net G5 and tied for CC#12, his photo #26067.

LOT 279 1794 S-57 R-1 VF25 . Slightly sharper with a few more light contact marks than you like to see at this level of sharpness. Most of the marks are located at the top of the reverse; a small rim bruise at ER in AMERICA is the best identifying mark. Glossy light chocolate bending to light olive brown in protected areas. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with two shallow “Trenches” in the field before the face, and the upper trench has a fine die crack running along its center. A nice cent with excellent eye appeal in spite of the minor marks.

LOT 281 1794 S-65 R-1 Wheelspoke Reverse VG8 . Fine sharpness but cleaned long ago and now toned pleasing light brown with hints of faded orange underneath. There are a few scattered pits on either side, and a rim bruise between UNITED and STATES. TDS, Wheelspoke reverse, with heavy bulging on the central reverse. Strong date.

LOT 280 1794 S-61 R-4 F15 . At least 5 points sharper but there are a few light rim bumps on both sides, the strongest ones at BE in LIBERTY and D-S on the reverse. Otherwise just minor marks including a planchet flake at the leaf tip under the O in OF. Glossy light to medium brown with light chocolate in protected areas. E-MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on the reverse. Graded VF25 net F15 and tied for CC#18 in the Noyes census, his photo #25712.

LOT 282 1794 S-66 R-5 VG8 . Sharpness VF20 but both sides are covered with uniform fine porosity. No verdigris and the only mark is a small nick or chip on the rim over the second T in STATES. Slightly glossy brown and light chocolate. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a fine die crack along the lower edge of the pole. A nicely detailed example of this tough variety, one of the sharpest known. Graded VF20 net VG7 and tied for CC#12 in the Noyes census, his photo #25727.
