S-168 EX DUPONT-BROWN-FRANKENFIELD
LOT 297 1798 S-168 R3 Small 8, Style II Hair VF25. Sharpness EF40 but there is roughness at OF AMERICA, the fraction, and UNIT. The obverse is smooth and has excellent eye appeal. Attractive glossy chocolate and olive brown with subtle wisps of lighter brown on the obverse. The roughness on the reverse is partially hidden under the glossy toning, but a glass reveals specks of dark verdigris. Just a few contact marks including a nick or short scratch under the Y, a tiny rim nick left of the L, a tiny rim bruise at the second T in STATES, and a dull nick over the N in ONE. LDS, Breen state IV, with clashmarks on the obverse and fine die cracks on the reverse. Graded VF35 by Del Bland. Noyes says EF45 sharpness net VF25, his photo #36329. Ex Charles J. LOT 298 1798 S-170 R3 Small 8, Style II Hair VF20. Sharpness VF35 but covered with uniform fine granularity. A small carbon spot under the first S in STATES can help identify this cent; otherwise only trivial contact marks. Brown and chocolate. E-MDS, Breen state II, with fine die clashmarks on both sides.
LOT 299 1798 S-170 R3 Small 8, Style II Hair, PCGS graded F12. Glossy medium steel brown and chocolate. There are some small puffs of darker olive brown on the obverse and an area of reddish brown toning at D-S. Nice surfaces for the grade. The only notable mark is a dull, very light scrape from the ear down to the shoulder, and it is difficult to see. E-MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on both sides but no crack on the obverse. Struck slightly off center to the bottom on the obverse causing some weakness at the bottom of the date. Our grade is F12. 1434.12/26358266
