EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 PEDIGREED 1834 N-5

LOT 447 1833 N-5 R1 Repunched 8, PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate with hints of very faded mint color in a few of the protected areas on the obverse. The only mark is a spot of shallow carbon on the right side of the second T in STATES. M-LDS, Grellman state c. The repunching on the 8 is clear (the so-called “Horned 8”) but the stray 8 punched into the dentils below that 8 is no longer visible. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees clockwise. Our grade is MS60. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label.

LOT 448 1834 N-1 R1 Small 8, Large Stars, Medium Letters AU50+. Frosty light steel brown. There is a small splash of darker brown toning at the tip of the coronet and a swipe of similar toning on the inner part of the hair bun. Just a few tiny contact marks including one in the field before the neck and another before the lower lip. Just a touch of friction on the highpoints. M-LDS, Grellman state c. There is crumbling between the right points of star 4 but the repunching inside the C in AMERICA is still visible. A clear double profile shows on the forehead, lips, chin, LIBERTY, and stars 8-12.

LOT 450 1834 N-5 R5 Large 8 & Stars, Medium Letters, NGC graded XF45. Frosty medium steel brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. There is a puff of light reddish brown toning at LI and another at the E in STATES, and this second one contains a trace of microscopic granularity. No verdigris, just a few trivial marks. A small planchet flake over star 4, a light scratch near the dentils from star 2 to star 3, and a minor rim bruise at the second A in AMERICA are the notable marks. MDS. There is a double profile on the forehead, nose, lips, chin, ERTY, and the ear. A nice example of this popular “Redbook” variety. Our grade is VF35. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. Comes with a nice provenance.

LOT 449 1834 N-2 R1 Small 8, Large Stars, Medium Letters VF30. Glossy light to medium brown. Smooth and attractive. A speck of carbon between star 11 and the hair bun is the only notable mark. However, there is a planchet delamination at CE in CENT (as made) that certainly catches your eye. E-MDS, Grellman state b. The spikes up from the dentils below the date are strong and there is a fine die crack at the left foot of the first A in AMERICA. A clear double profile shows on the forehead, lips, and chin.
