EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS
TERMINAL STATE S-198
LOT 315 1800 S-198 R5+ AG3. Sharpness close to G4 but there are several fine, old scratches on the obverse and minor roughness covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. No verdigris. Partly glossy steel brown blending to darker chocolate in protected areas. Very rare LDS, Breen state VI, with a clearly defined cud break connecting the ER in AMERICA to the rim. The date is clear and the legends are readable, although some letters are weak. One of only 7 examples of the die state known to us.

OFF-CENTER S-199
LOT 316 1800 S-199 R4 NGC graded FA02 Broadstruck. Partly glossy chocolate brown with slightly lighter brown toning on the highpoints. The gloss is subdued by a layer of oxidation that could (and should) be brushed away. Both sides are covered with microscopic hairlines, but it takes a strong glass to see them. Essentially just a well worn cent. LDS with strong swelling covering most of the reverse. The date is strong. Struck 5% off center to K-2, apparently the reason for the “Broadstruck” claim made by the folks at NGC. Our grade is Fair-2+. The Mervis provenance is noted on the NGC label. 2038619-005
