EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 S-113 EX NEWCOMB-SHELDON-DOWNING

LOT 264 1796 S-113 R5 Draped Bust F15. Ten points sharper but covered with uniform very fine roughness under glossy dark olive brown toning. No verdigris and the only mark is a small, barely visible nick on the rim over the left side of the E in LIBERTY. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with a strong die crack through the lowest curl and 17. The date and legends are strong. Graded VF25 net F15 and tied for CC#8 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF25 net VG10 and tied for CC#12, his photo #23918. Comes with a great provenance. Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & Co. 2/7/1945:106-Dr. William H. Sheldon-Homer K. Downing, 1952 ANA Sale (New Netherlands Coin Co. #38), lot 1752-Willard C. Blaisdell-Myles Z. Gerson-Dr. Philip W. Ralls, Superior 1/1990:284-Dr. Ralph W. Rucker Collection (includes the Rucker collection envelope)

LOT 265 1796 S-113 R5 Draped Bust G4+. Glossy steel brown and light chocolate. No roughness or verdigris but there are may small marks. A depression in the planchet just right of the 6 and another in the field at the end of the nose are the obvious defects. EDS, Breen state II, with a fine die crack through the center of the 1 but no die clashmarks (a die state called “Extremely Rare” by Breen). The date is strong and the legend outside the wreath is clear.

LOT 266 1796 S-115 R3 Draped Bust ANACS graded F12 Details, Corroded & Scratched. Sharpness VG10 but covered with fine corrosion, strongest on the obverse where there are areas of moderate roughness. No verdigris. The only contact marks are some old scratches on the shoulder and more at LI in LIBERTY, all lost in the roughness and toning. The details on the reverse are consistent with a grade closer to VF20. Dull chocolate and dark olive with steel overtones on the reverse. MDS, Breen state V, with a strong crack arcing through the date, clashmarks on the obverse, and a narrow but clearly defined rim cud at AM. Our grade is net G4 . The attribution is noted on the ANACS label. 7446902
