EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 RARE MASSACHUSETTSHALF CENT

LOT 84 1787 Massachusetts Half Cent Ryder 6-A R6- VF30. Ten points sharper but there is a horizontal scratch through the hand holding the arrow, a couple more in the field right of the feet, and a dull scrape on the lower right part of the shield. Otherwise this piece is choice and the toning is a very attractive glossy brown and light chocolate. The planchet is not perfectly round thanks to a couple incipient planchet clips that affect only the dentils. Comes with a great provenance. Removed from an NGC holder called AU Details Scratched (NGC label #2048905-012 included, and it shows the attribution and Ryder-Partrick provenance). Weight 73.6 grains.

Ex Charles Steigerwalt 10/15/1908-Hillyer Ryder-F. C. C. Boyd-John J. Ford, Jr., Stack’s 10/2004:78-Jon Hanson 10/12/2004-Donald Groves Partrick, Heritage Auctions 1/8/2015:5683 (includes the Partrick collection envelope and both lot tickets)

Nicely struck with a strong date and devices. A tough variety with the Pattern Reverse. Comes with a nice provenance. Weight 131.2 grains.
