EARLY CENTS AUCTIONS

 1849 N-29 “FATBOY”

LOT 490 1849 N-29 R2 EF40. Glossy medium olive. No spots or roughness, just a few light contact marks including a tick midway between star 1 and the throat and a few ticks over the N in CENT. Nicely struck EDS, die state a. Struck on a thick “Fatboy” planchet that weighs 182.0 grains, significantly heavier than the 168.0-grain standard. CC#6 of about a dozen known of the “Fatboy” variation.

Ex Larry Briggs, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 9/2005:550-McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 6/4/2017:620 (includes the Briggs sales ticket and both lot tickets)

LOT 491 1850 N-3 R1 AU55. Glossy steel brown and light chocolate. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. The best identifying marks are a tiny tick left of star 1 and a microscopic planchet flake at the end of the wreath stem. LDS, die state c. The fields on both sides are slightly reflective thanks to a fresh die polishing. Comes with a nice provenance.

Lot 491 Ephemera

Ex Jack H. Robinson, Superior 1/29/1989:1523-March Wells, 1996 EAC Sale, lot 335 (includes both lot tickets)

LOT 493 1850 N-17 R4 AU50. Sharpness very close to mint state but lightly cleaned and retoned olive and steel brown with very faded red in protected areas. The reverse is lustrous. Just a few trivial marks including a thin nick right of the main curl and a dull pinprick in the field off the end of the nose. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The fields on the obverse are slightly reflective and all the fine die lines are clear. Might benefit from a proper retoning on the obverse. Tied for CC#8 in the Grellman census. Comes with a nice provenance.

LOT 492 1850 N-15 R2 MS60. Lustrous light olive and steel. Sharply struck with excellent eye appeal. The only notable defects are some tiny specks of darker toning on the right side of the obverse. A spot of darker toning on a dentil right of star 11 is the best identifying mark. LDS, die state b. The die lines over star 5 are gone and the fields are slightly reflective thanks to a relatively fresh die polishing on that side.
